The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is the largest international exchange program of the United States, offering opportunities for graduating seniors, graduate students, and young professionals to pursue graduate studies and/or advanced research abroad. The program awards approximately 1,500 scholarships annually across all fields of study and operates in more than 155 countries worldwide.
In Chile, the program provides U.S. students with the opportunity to conduct research at Chilean universities and research institutions for a period of up to nine months. Applicants may choose from three award options: the Open Study/Research Award, which allows applicants from any field to design independent research projects; the Partnerships Awards, which offer more structured placements aligned with the priorities of selected universities and research centers; and the Chile Lithium Award, focused on research related to lithium systems, salars, and associated scientific and technological fields.
Application Deadline for 2027–2028: October 6, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. (ET)
Proceso de Postulación
This award supports U.S. graduate students conducting research in Chile across diverse disciplines, depending on the specific award, at accredited Chilean universities and research institutions. The application process is managed through the Fulbright U.S. Student Program platform. It requires the submission of a detailed project proposal, a letter of affiliation from a host institution in Chile, letters of recommendation, and additional supporting materials. Applicants are strongly encouraged to begin preparing early, identify potential host institutions, and ensure their project is feasible and well aligned with Chile’s academic and research environment.
The program is open to graduating seniors, graduate students, and young professionals from all disciplines. Strong candidates present clear, well-structured proposals that demonstrate the academic value of conducting research in Chile and the potential for meaningful exchange between Chilean and U.S. institutions.

Projects typically involve research, fieldwork, data collection, and collaboration with faculty and research teams at the host institution. Depending on the award and project design, participants may also engage in academic seminars, institutional activities, or audit courses that support the methodological aspects of their research.
The scholarship is designed to support research stays at higher education institutions and research centers in Chile for a period of up to nine months, typically from March to November. Grant dates are aligned with the Chilean academic calendar and begin with an orientation session organized by the Fulbright Commission in Chile during the first week of March. Extensions beyond the established grant period are not permitted.
All projects are expected to foster active academic engagement, contribute to ongoing research or institutional initiatives, and promote sustained collaboration between Chilean and U.S. academic communities.
